Renting a Car at Samui Airport (USM)
Samui Airport (USM) is unique in Thailand — it is owned and operated by Bangkok Airways, making it the only airline-owned airport in the country. The open-air garden terminal sits in Bophut on the north coast. Because the terminal is compact, car rental desks are positioned right at arrivals, and baggage typically clears within 15–20 minutes. You can be behind the wheel before most passengers at larger airports have even found the rental shuttle.
| Pickup type | Companies | Where to find them |
|---|---|---|
| In-terminal desk | Drive Car Rental, Avis, Budget, Sixt, Europcar, ASAP, Thai Rent A Car, SmackOne | Steps from baggage claim, inside arrivals hall |
| Meet & greet / phone on arrival | Hertz, Keddy, Chic Car Rent | Call on landing; agent meets you at the terminal |
| Short walk (approx. 300 m) | Enterprise / Alamo / National | Turn left out of baggage — signposted from the exit |
| Hotel or terminal delivery | James Rental Samui, Samui Cars Group | Book online; they deliver to the terminal or your hotel |
Local firms such as James Rental (French-managed since 2002, AXA Class 1 insurance) and Samui Cars Group offer free terminal delivery and are often 20–40% cheaper than the international chains. Pre-booking online beats walk-in rates at every counter. Compare rental cars before you land to lock in the best price.
Bring your International Driving Permit (IDP) and your original home licence. Neither document is valid alone at the rental desk — you need both. Get your IDP before you travel; it cannot be issued overseas.
From Samui Airport to Your Hotel
USM sits on the north coast, which puts most popular beach areas within a short drive. Average island speed rarely tops 40 km/h due to traffic lights, roundabouts, and scooters, so times below assume typical daytime conditions — allow extra during Chaweng afternoon rush.
| Destination | Drive time from USM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Big Buddha (Bang Rak) | 5–10 min | Closest beach area; 3–4 km via Route 4171 |
| Bophut / Fisherman's Village | 10–15 min | Same north coast as USM; boutique dining strip |
| Chaweng | 10–15 min | Busiest beach; peak-hour traffic adds 5–10 min |
| Choeng Mon | 10–15 min | NE coast; calm crescent, good for families |
| Maenam | 15–25 min | Long quiet beach; budget-friendly area |
| Lamai | 25–35 min | SE coast; allow extra time via Ring Road 4169 |
| Nathon ferry pier | 30–45 min | SW capital; departure point for mainland ferries |
A rental car pays for itself quickly compared to island taxis, which charge 400–600 THB minimum for short hops and 600–1,000 THB to Chaweng from USM. With a car, you can take in beaches and day trips by car at your own pace and explore beyond the main resort strips. If you plan to base yourself on the east coast, read our guide to basing yourself in Chaweng for parking tips and local driving notes.
Opening Hours, Late Arrivals and One-Way Rentals
Most rental desks at USM operate roughly 08:00–20:00 or 21:00. Bangkok Airways runs scheduled flights into Samui until approximately 22:30, meaning a significant share of arrivals land after every desk has closed. Planning ahead avoids being stranded.
- Pre-book and confirm after-hours pickup if your flight lands after 20:00 — many firms offer hotel delivery that continues past desk closing time.
- Ask explicitly about the cut-off time when booking; 'open late' means different things to different operators.
- Drop-box returns (leaving keys after hours) shift liability for any damage or theft entirely to you until a staff member inspects the vehicle the next morning — avoid unless the operator has a clear written policy.
- One-way rentals (picking up at USM, returning at a different point such as a hotel in Lamai or the Nathon pier area) carry a surcharge — Hakuna, for example, charges 5,000 THB for one-way drops.
- One-way fees are often waived for rentals of five to seven days or more — confirm at booking, not on collection day.
- Economy rates at Samui run 700–1,200 THB/day in low season and 1,000–1,600 THB/day in peak (December–February). Book two to four weeks ahead in peak season; walk-in availability can be zero.
Flying via Surat Thani (URT) Instead
Surat Thani Airport (URT) is the mainland alternative used by budget carriers — AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air all serve it. Flights from Bangkok to URT cost roughly 400–600 THB versus 1,200–4,000+ THB into USM on Bangkok Airways. That saving sounds large but the transfer to Samui erases much of it.
| Factor | Samui USM | Surat Thani URT |
|---|---|---|
| Airlines | Bangkok Airways (premium, direct) | AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air (budget) |
| Typical BKK fare | 1,200–4,000+ THB | 400–600 THB |
| Onward connection | None — terminal is on Samui | Bus to Donsak ferry pier (~90 min / 95 km) |
| Ferry to Samui | Not needed | Raja or Seatran ferry: 1.5–2.5h |
| Total journey time | Flight + 20 min to hotel | Flight + approx. 2h15m to 5h with luggage |
| Joint bus + ferry ticket | Not applicable | ~424–1,100 THB per person |
| Best for | 5+ day stays, families, business travel | Backpackers, long trips, or bringing your own car |
For most travelers on stays of five days or more, flying direct into USM is the simpler and less exhausting choice. The URT route makes sense for backpackers, those on long open-ended trips, or anyone driving their own vehicle over from the mainland on the car ferry.
Bringing a Car Across on the Ferry
Two car-ferry operators connect the mainland port of Donsak with Samui. Raja Ferry runs to Lipa Noi on the southwest coast (420–640 THB per car including the driver; hourly departures 05:00–19:00; crossing approx. 1.5 hours; capacity up to 70 cars per sailing). Seatran Ferry runs to Nathon, Samui's capital pier (approx. 580 THB car plus driver; hourly; 1.5 hours). On busy weekends and Thai public holidays, book three or more days ahead. Lomprayah operates fast passenger catamarans but carries no cars at all.
Can you take a rental car on the ferry?
Only for mainland-to-Samui crossings if the rental firm explicitly permits it — and most local Samui firms do not. Where the strict rule applies is island-hopping: a Samui rental car may not be taken on any ferry to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. Nearly all rental contracts prohibit leaving Samui island, and because many cars are GPS-tracked, violating this condition typically voids your insurance. Koh Tao has no car ferry in any case.
Rule: park your rental car at a mainland or Samui pier and take a passenger boat to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. Good parking is available at Nathon (west), Maenam/Pralarn (north, large lot), and Bang Rak (northeast). Passenger fares: Samui to Phangan 200–500 THB; Samui to Koh Tao approx. 600–700 THB (about 2 hours).
